Keys 100 Fundraising
One of the reasons I chose to do this race was because it raises money to fund educational outreach and free prostate cancer screenings in South Florida and the Keys and the funding also supports cancer research. Since my wife had cancer at the time, it was a driving point for me wanting to do this. When you sign up for the race, you will get a fundraising account that is tied to your race registration. All you have to do is give people the link and when they donate, it instantly shows up on your fundraising page.
Here is a link to the fundraiser we did for the race, I am not sure how long it stays up after the race is over.
Samm and Chris’ 100 Miles for Cancer
Most of the donations we received came from my coworkers and from my friends that I stay in touch with online. So it was really easy to just post the link on FaceBook or on a forum page with a description of what I was trying to do. Everyone knew I was doing races and dedicating them to my wife, and they knew that she had cancer. It was really touching to see how many people were willing to donate funds for this, we ended up with over $800. Also, if you raise 3 times the amount of your registration fee, you get a full refund. That ended up really helping us out with preparations and the gas to drive down to the Keys.
On May 28th, my wife had her last treatment of chemotherapy and is now cancer free.
