Rest In Power
1972-2025
As I’m sure everyone else who was a fan and friend of Tomas Lindberg felt when they heard the news of his passing, I was stunned into silence. I must have read the article title twenty times before I could actually click on it and read that he was really gone. At The Gates was my favorite band, and one of the rarities that I heard live before ever listening to a studio album. The initial impression they left on me was that profound when I saw them in Seattle on their 2008 comeback tour.

More importantly, the person he was probably had the bigger impact on his fans who were fortunate enough to meet him. I was able to do so in Iceland when At The Gates headlined a festival in a tiny town on a fjord that felt like we were on the edge of the world. Absolute fan boy moment for me but Tomas was gracious and cheerful while taking time out of his day to talk to me.

His vocals were the perfect crown on every album he sang on; the “Go!” after the opening riff of Slaughter of the Soul caused crowds to erupt like an ant pile getting kicked over. As I said, seeing that first twenty seconds of their set in Seattle changed everything for me in a time in my life when I was desperate for something powerful and positive.
