Getting the opportunity to visit Greenland is still something that seems a bit surreal. Looking on any world map and seeing the gigantic white island and knowing there are indeed cities situated along its coasts is a reminder that even the most remote areas of the world hold cultures and sights waiting to be explored. Now that I have visited a few of them myself, I can definitely say going to Greenland afforded me some of the most beautiful scenery and unique opportunities that I could have ever imagined. I had tried unsuccessfully to make it to the Arctic Circle by car once before, so finally getting there was satisfying. I went by signing up for a marathon held in the outpost town of Kangerlussuaq, run by a company called Albatross Adventure. As an ultra runner, I welcomed the challenge of competing in a race done in such extreme conditions, but coming from Florida definitely presented several challenges both in running the race and simply being able to travel comfortably from 80 degree temperatures to a place that saw some extreme cold and winds. All of that was worth the reward of experiencing this unique country and the journey even farther north to the city of Ilulissat and the ice fjord will be on of the most memorable travel experiences I’ll ever have. Here are my writings about each of the places I visited in Greenland.
